NEWS RELEASE #84
May 7, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE.

MORE THAN JUST “STOP, DROP AND ROLL”

Kenton Elementary School students got a first-hand chance to experience a fire emergency when the Aurora Fire Department recently arrived at school. The students took part in a fire safety training exercise.

As part of the exercise, students learned how to safely escape a “burning” building. They climbed out of a window and went down a slide to get to a safe place (see attached photos – please credit Aurora Fire Department).

The students are encouraged to take what they learn at school from the Aurora Fire Department and share it at home with their family members.

The training is funded by a grant the Aurora Fire Department received from the Department of Homeland Security’s “Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG),” Fire Prevention and Safety Grant. The grant enables local fire departments and emergency medical services organizations to purchase or receive training, conduct first responder health and safety programs, and buy equipment and response vehicles. The award given to the Aurora Fire Department is specifically to provide instruction to those citizens who are either under 15 or over 65 years of age.
