$50,000 GRANT AWARDED TO APS

For the first time ever, the Piton Foundation has awarded a $50,000 grant to APS to support the implementation of Pilot Schools - innovative public schools that are given the autonomy to create a culture that supports high expectations and achievement.

While still a part of the district, Pilot Schools have increased control over budget, design of instruction, daily and yearly schedules and calendars, and staffing decisions.

Opening in August 2008, William Smith High School will be the first APS Pilot School. William Smith will add a focus on expeditionary learning that includes internships, language immersion, fieldwork, travel, and community partnerships.

A special press conference and check presentation will take place on Wednesday, May 21 at 11 a.m. at William Smith High School, 400 Airport Blvd 80011.

The Piton Foundation grant will be used to:

  • implement a Pilot School at William Smith High School
  • support the extension of the Pilot School program in APS

Pilot Schools are possible because of the collaboration between APS and the Aurora Education Association.
