APS Celebrates Read-Aloud Month

If you visit an APS classroom this month, you will hear students and Colorado elected officials talking about their favorite books. The excitement stems from “Readers Who are Leaders” activities that involved the entire community as part of Colorado Read Aloud Month. Nearly 500 elected officials, business leaders and community members will read with students at Aurora schools during October.

State Senator Suzanne Williams, State representatives Morgan Carroll, Nancy Todd and Michael Garcia, Arapahoe Commissioner Lynn Myers and State Board Member Karen Middleton are “Readers who are Leaders.”

Aurora City Council members Larry Beer, Bob FitzGerald and Ryan Frazier are also sharing their favorite books with students.

“It was nice to have someone read to me.  I really liked the story.  I can’t wait to go to the library and get it.”

Local businesses are also participating.  Members of the Aurora Rotary Club, Keller Williams and Frontier Airlines employees are also reading to students.

APS will observe Read-Aloud Month with reading activities, bookmarks and certificates for students who participate. Many teachers are working with students to create their “top ten reading lists.” APS joins Mayor Tauer, who declared by proclamation Read-Aloud Month for Aurora, and the Colorado Council of International Reading Association in celebrating October as Read-Aloud Month.
