APS Saves $12 Million in Bond Program, Funds Extra School Construction Projects

Thanks to careful financial management, Aurora Public Schools has $12 million in additional bond funds to spend on improving its facilities. The APS Board of Education reviewed several options for spending these funds and approved projects for six schools at its Dec. 12 meeting.

The projects include a new building for Boston Elementary School and a new Intercept/Transition Services building for special needs students.

“We have made a real effort to get the most value out of every bond dollar. These extra funds will benefit our students by providing a better learning environment that supports student achievement.”
- Anthony Sturges

Boston Elementary School will be replaced with a three-story building similar to the new Paris Elementary which opened this year. The new Boston building will accommodate 425 students and provide a kindergarten-fifth grade program. The new Boston Elementary will open in August 2008.

The new Intercept/Transition Services Building will be located next to Pickens Technical College. The building will replace the annex buildings at Lansing and Laredo elementary schools that currently house these programs. The new facility is slated to open in August 2008.

APS will spend the remaining funds on the following projects:

  • Aurora Hills and Mrachek middle schools repairs and improvements
  • Gateway High School roof replacement - design only
  • Hinkley High School pool building repairs
  • Aurora Hills will receive funds for second-story windows and new lockers
  • Mrachek will receive funds for new carpet and lockers.

District voters approved the $225 million bond construction program in 2002. For more information about the APS bond program, log onto: www.aps.k12.co.us/bond2002.
