Boston Elementary Volunteer Inspires New Readers

Almost every day of the school year, Bud Hall can be found at Boston Elementary School helping students learn to read. This is a special passion for “Grandpa” Hall, as he is affectionately known by students.

A former teacher and NORAD band conductor, Hall now dedicates much of his time to volunteering. “I have been a life-long volunteer. There are so many opportunities right here in my own backyard. I started by donating school supplies to Boston six years ago, and I’ve been here ever since,” Hall said.

“I have seen so much progress with this year’s class.  They have really grown as readers.  Having Mr. Hall read with the students has made a great difference."

“Many of the students really bloom when they have one-on-one attention with their reading. It’s wonderful to know that something I enjoy so much is helping kids.”

“I couldn’t read at all at the beginning of the year. With Grandpa Hall’s help, now I’m one of the best readers in the class.”

He has had a home in the neighborhood since 1961 and his children attended school there. After school, students who live in the neighborhood often stop by his home to sit on the front porch swing and read with him.
