Century Honors Dedicated Volunteer on 90th Birthday

When Century Elementary opened its doors in 1985, Rose Mainero, affectionately known as "Grandma Rose," was one of the first school volunteers to sign up. More than 20 years later, Mainero still volunteers at Century nearly every day.

On Oct. 19, Century staff and students packed the school's gymnasium to celebrate her contribution with a surprise party for her 90th birthday. As Grandma Rose sat in her favorite chair, students from each classroom presented her with flowers, poems, cards and birthday banners. Family members, including Arkansas Elementary Principal Carol McBride, Mainero's daughter, joined in the celebration.

Mainero volunteers four days a week, reading to preschool through third-grade classes and working one-on-one with students. She is also a member of the Century Accountability Committee.

“Rose Mainero is an irreplacable part of the Century family. Everyone here looks forward to receiving her hugs, hearing her kind words, sharing her stories and eating her sweet treats. Her compassionate and vibrant personality exudes the care and concern she shares for the entire Century community on a daily basis.”

“I come here for the children. I'm here to help them read and learn-- and to be part of the Century family. To everyone at Century, I want to say thank you for letting me be your Grandma Rose.”
