APS Unveils Winning Logo
Dear APS staff members and community:
Last night we unveiled our new district logo.  The new logo will help keep the momentum of new energy in APS to embrace the vision of VISTA 2010 and will be integrated throughout the district over time.  I want to explain the purpose and the rollout so you understand we are doing this responsibly and in a fiscally sound manner.
I've heard questions from some people in the community about how the new logo will be introduced into the district and how much it will cost.
The plan is to phase the new logo into the district gradually.  Our goal is to minimize costs and change out the logo in normal planned replacements that typically occur throughout the school year through normal attrition.  We estimate this will take two years or so.
Specifically, on printed items such as letterhead and business cards, the old logo will be replaced as new orders are submitted to print services.  Makeovers to district signs and vehicles will also occur in the replacement cycle over the next few years.  We are negotiating with local businesses to update our external school signs with agreements for commercial operations to pay for the signs and to show non-obtrusive advertisements--work in progress.

I believe it is important to have a new logo and a new look for APS to support our new strategic plan, VISTA 2010, and the direction we are headed -- to become the premier school district in the state.

The APS Board of Education and the district Leadership Team have set goals and challenged everyone in APS to be the best they can possibly be.  I am grateful that countless students and staff members have risen to the challenges, and this is a prime example of how the people here in APS continue to exceed our expectations.  More than 3,000 people throughout the APS community voted for their favorite logo, and this new look will support our new energy and efforts.  Symbols and logos are powerful messages that are important to aid in our communication, not only to our own teammates in APS but also to citizens outside, that we are on an exciting journey to "Pick up the PACE" in accelerating student achievement and closing the gap.
The winning logo, created by Tracy Anderson of Pickens Technical College, is a great representation of where we are heading.  I couldn't be prouder that the symbol we have selected to represent our school district was done by a student in APS.

If we had contracted this out to a commercial operation, we would have spent tens of thousands of dollars.  So, we have avoided that expense and given the semi-finalists and finalist gift certificates that have saved us a lot of money.  Tracy now has the satisfaction of seeing her work around our district for years to come -- congratulations to Tracy Anderson!

As a school district, we are helping our students prepare for success in the global community.

So you know the significance of the logo, let me explain how it represents our future:
The figure is representing action by its movement and supports our focus on accelerating student achievement and "Picking up the Pace;" the figure is multicolored to represent diversity in our district; the figure is balancing a globe representing APS as a world-class organization that is going to embrace globalization so our graduates can be competitive in this dynamic world; the mountains in the background represent Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region. The four peaks also represent the key elements of VISTA 2010:  People, Achievement, Community and Environment, with the second and highest peak representing Achievement, which is the most important part of VISTA 2010.

With this new logo, I know there will be a continued sense of energy and enthusiasm throughout APS.  The momentum continues to increase.  Our new logo will assist us in representing internally and externally that we are an exciting district committed to accelerating student achievement for our kids.  Once again, I would like to thank and congratulate all of the students who entered this contest.
