Million-Page Readers at Virginia Court Elementary School
APS teachers have developed many creative ways to increase student learning. Anne Brown at Virginia Court uses her Million-Page Readers program to encourage her students to read.

Anne Brown's second-grade class sets a goal of reading a million pages. Pages read by students and pages read to students by adults count toward the goal.

"I have invited adults to read to my class and share their joy of reading," said Brown. "This helps our children learn that reading is important to everyone."

Politicians, business and television personalities, administrators, teachers, and parents all contribute to the reading. The employees of the Finance Center at Lowry send several readers on a regular basis. Xcel Energy has awarded Brown a grant to help with the Million-Page Readers program. Hearing many adults reading their favorite children's literature increases the students' love for reading. The time students spend reading increases and their test scores improve.

Students listen intently as Congressman and Mrs. Beauprez read.

Brown added, "We actually reached one million pages a few years ago. Adults like helping in the schools and children like meeting adults other than teachers. This community partnership helps our children learn to read!"

Other adults scheduled to read this year include Aurora Police Department Division Chief Douglas Abraham, Tina Griego of the Rocky Mountain News, Channel 7 Weatherman Marty Coniglio, State Representative Michael Garcia, Arapahoe County Commissioner Debra Vickery, and Jim Benneman and Stephanie Riggs of Channel 4 News.
