Montview Mothers Unite

Although rewarding, responsibly filling the role of a mother or father is a challenge.  It is much more difficult to be both.  In today’s society, single parenthood is a reality for many.  But, don’t despair!  Single Mothers of Montview is here!

Montview Elementary Family Liaison Nedra Rudolph has established a support system for single parents in the Aurora community called Single Mothers of Montview (SMOM).  Rudolph is a single mother of three.

“I am striving to empower single parents and build a stronger sense of family with them. It’s a pleasure to establish personal relationships with the parents I see every day at work.”

Members of SMOM meet twice a month to share their personal stories, give and receive encouragement and valuable feedback, ask questions, occasionally vent and ultimately establish positive relationships with one another.  They also discuss topics such as money and time management, useful resources and parenting tips.  In a recent meeting, parents were reminded that it’s not only okay, but necessary to pamper themselves every now and then.

“Single parents must learn to invest more into themselves as well as their children,” said group member Daun Bean.  “Someone who’s not happy or healthy can’t take good care of their children.”

SMOM is open to all who are interested, including single fathers and single parents with children who attend other schools.  In the future, members hope to incorporate children’s activities, involve them in open discussions and establish “play dates” for them to socialize outside of school hours.
