STEP Volunteer Shirley Smith Makes a Difference for APS
Shirley Smith has dedicated hundreds of hours helping assemble math kits for the children of Arkansas, Dartmouth, Jewell, Kenton, Lyn Knoll, Paris and Sixth Avenue elementary schools. Although she has exceeded her time limit for STEP volunteering, she keeps right on working for APS as a volunteer.
At Sixth Avenue Elementary School, Smith volunteers in the art classroom. She has helped create displays of student art work, made more than 1000 sketchbooks for the students, and helped cut, mount and assemble art supplies. Her decades of experience as a teacher provide the students with the care and understanding that helps them learn.
Smith's volunteer efforts extend beyond APS as she makes gifts for cancer and nursing home patients.
Sixth Avenue Elementary School students say, "Mrs. Smith is a really nice lady and she would say yes to everything if she had time. She is a giving person and she cares for kids. We want to thank her for helping in the art classroom."

Smith assists a student with her art project.

Sixth Avenue Elementary art teacher Cameron Ferreyra says, "Shirley Smith is a very rare gem. Shirley gives her time and shares her contagious smile with every one she encounters."

We thank her for the gift of her unselfish dedication to students and teachers in Aurora.
