Starbucks "Heroic Efforts" Writing Contest
Starbucks on East Colfax Avenue sponsored a writing contest for select neighborhood schools this winter. Students practiced their writing skills while learning about their community.

All third through fifth-grade students were eligible to participate in this exciting opportunity. All students received recognition for their participation.

Students wrote about the members of our community whom they consider to be heroes.

The schools involved were:
  • Altura Elementary
  • Clyde Miller Elementary
  • Laredo Elementary
  • Paris Elementary
  • Park Lane Elementary
  • Sable Elementary

Many moving essays were written.

Based on the quality of the essay, the grand prize of a basketball signed by Magic Johnson went to a Laredo Elementary School student. The winning essay explained how his mother was his hero. An honorable mention went to an Altura Elementary School student.

The winning APS writers are honored at a cocoa celebration at Starbucks.

Good job, APS writers!
