Turning Around Truants

When a widely publicized door-knocking campaign showed how serious Superintendent John L. Barry and his leadership team were about getting kids back in school, many took notice.

One Hinkley High School student, a former truant student, was so inspired by the campaign that he sat down to write a letter to the superintendent.

“I am glad to hear of the new truancy policy the district is enforcing,” he wrote.  “It  will not only make the school a better place to be at, but it will make students and teachers better people …”
Some fellow classmates have told him they don’t agree with the policy, saying it will only make more students drop out.
But talking from his own experiences, he knows that is not true.  The Hinkley student wants other kids to realize “…how valuable school really is, and that school is only trying to help us, not harm us.”

With a newly formed truancy task force, APS staff members are aggressively enforcing truancy intervention and creating support for parents and students to succeed and be in class every day.

To achieve the district vision of graduating every student with the choice to go to college without remediation, the APS truancy policy strives to keep students in school.

"As part of our collaborative effort, here is one student's perspective on how we can affect truancy. I'm pleased to see that our outreach is impacting students, and they are taking notice.  If we bring even one student back, this campaign is a success.  Imagine what we can do if we bring them all back!"
