Vaughn Students Learn with Volunteers in the Art Room

Jo Littrell, a STEP volunteer, and Pat Downey, a retired APS teacher, are shining examples of what a huge difference an individual can make in the lives of our students.

-Kim Dufford, Vaughn art teacher

Littrel was asked to be a friend to a fourth-grade student. At first he would not speak with her or do his art work. By the end of the year, he was coming in during lunch to visit her. He is now a confident and personable fifth-grader who comes to visit Littrel every time she works at Vaughn.
Downey's 29 years of teaching experience provide a wealth of skills in working with children who may be struggling. Her one-on-one attention, gentle presence and quiet encouragement make a tremendous difference in a child's day.
