| Side Creek Elementary Students Sing for Veterans |
Holding American flags and wearing red, white and blue, APS students showed their honor for American heroes in November. APS students paid tribute to nearly 700 veterans during the 2006 Veterans Salute sponsored by the Aurora Senior Center and City of Aurora. Students from Side Creek Elementary School, under the direction of Peggy Hassan, performed patriotic songs at the event. |

Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets from Gateway, Rangeview, Central and Hinkley high schools have supported this event for many years. The Citizen Heroes History Squadron and the Drill Team performed in front of uniformed veterans. |
| Aurora Central H.S. JROTC Students Rise Early to Salute Veterans |
| The Aurora Central High School JROTC hosted the annual Veteran's Day salute to Aurora Public School veterans. Beginning at sunrise, JROTC students participated in a flag raising ceremony. More than 70 people shared in the continental breakfast reception where students and veterans had the opportunity to visit. This event offered ROTC cadet William Rosal a chance to honor his father, William Rosal Sr., a 20-year veteran and APS bus driver. |

| Iraq War Veteran Speaks to West M.S. Students |
West Middle School students welcomed special guests into their school. Captain Dan Kerley, Iraq war veteran and husband of West Middle School teacher Laura Wetendorf, shared his experiences at a Veterans' Day Presentation for sixth-grade students. |
Kerley is the Commander of the 244th Combat Engineering Battalion (HSC) in Aurora. He was stationed in Tikrit, Iraq when Saddam Hussein was captured. Capt. Kerley received the Bronze Star for successfully running convoys. He showcased his award medals, Middle Eastern jewelry and a camel saddle. He also shared photos of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which fit perfectly with what sixth-grade students are learning in Social Studies. |
