Adequate Yearly Progress

The data below is the most current data available.
Adequate Yearly Progress reports are mandated in the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Click here for information on NCLB. The intent of AYP is to measure whether schools are on track for making proficiency targets set by the state and federal governments. By 2014, 100 percent of students are targeted to be proficient.
AYP is based primarily on Colorado Student Assessment Program scores but does not include students who have been enrolled for less than one year or English Language Learners who have been in the United States for less than three years. The Colorado Department of Education recently released Adequate Yearly Progress results for state school districts. Based on CSAP scores, APS met 128 of the 148 measured academic targets that determine the “adequate yearly progress” of our students.

What is AYP?

As part of the federal No Child Left Behind Act, AYP is used to measure student progress toward meeting federal reading and math proficiency standards. AYP measures academic performance targets of different groups of students, including those living with poverty, with disabilities or with limited English-language proficiency as well as students of every ethnicity.  Schools and districts with 30 or more students in any group are required to report performance target information on that group. 

How did APS do?

In 2005, the AYP performance targets in all subjects are higher than 2004. The increases were largest for math in middle and high school.  “Under the new 2005 targets, APS met 86 percent of our targets.  The district would have met 91 percent of targets if the measures had remained stable.  At the middle school level, we met 93 percent of the targets in 2005.  We would have met 100 percent if the 2004 rating would have remained in place," said Assessment Director Lisa Escárcega.

 
At the elementary level, APS met 85 percent of targets using the 2005 measure.  APS would have met 90 percent of the elementary targets if the 2004 targets had remained in place. At the high school level, APS met 79 percent of the targets using both 2005 and 2004 measures.
"We've made the greatest progress at the middle school level, particularly in math.  Overall, we are helping students increase their proficiency levels and seeing results in particular with our most at-risk students," said Escárcega.
The district and individual schools must meet 100 percent of the targets to make adequate yearly progress under NCLB. As a result, even though APS met 86 percent of the performance targets, the district overall did not make AYP.

What does AYP really tell us?

Some district schools missed AYP because only one or two students did not meet the targets.  APS is seeing annual student academic growth at almost every level, but AYP does not highlight this.  AYP indicates how students perform according to the federal targets, but it does not tell anything about how much a student learns over the course of a year.  "These AYP results only partially reflect the hard work and accomplishments of our students, staff and parents," said Superintendent Bob Adams. 

With more than 30,000 students, APS is the sixth-largest district in Colorado. According to CDE no district with a student enrollment of 5,400 or more met AYP performance targets.
