Constructive Use of Time Asset #19 - Religious Community

Since East is a public school, we cannot support any one religion over any other religion nor can we provide opportunities for anyone to promote a religion here at school.  But, according to East=s asset survey last year, over half of our students are involved in some type of church, religious or faith community.  There are many religions, faiths and traditions represented in the student body and staff of East Middle School.  Whether we participate in a religious community or not, each of us must be open, accepting, appreciative, understanding, respectful and tolerant of each other=s beliefs and practices.  Remember that Aassets count@.

Nine benefits from being involved in a religious or faith community:

Faith communities:

1 - Reduce risky behaviors

2 - Teach values

3 - Are intergenerational

4 - Provide caring and support

5 - Have high expectations for their young people

6 - Provide opportunities to be contributing members of a group

7 - Encourage service to others

8 - Nurture social competencies and leadership

9 - Offer security and stability
