Elkhart Paraeducator Wins Local Award

Congratulations to Elkhart paraeducator Francis Umetsu who won the Aurora Asian/Pacific Community Partnership Award.

Umetsu, a retired military officer, has worked in Elkhart's media center for more than two years. He donates 200 books to Elkhart's library each year including bi-lingual titles written in Korean, Vietnamese, Cambodian and Chinese.

Elkhart students are grateful for the knowledge Umetsu brings to the media center. "Mr. Francis knows almost every book in the library," said a fifth-grade student.

The Asian/Pacific Community Partnership honors students and educators annually for outstanding contributions in education.

Though the award is a great honor, it is the joy of putting books into the hands of kids that Umetsu finds most rewarding. "I don't do this work for awards. I love books. I think everyone should read and I enoy introducing students to new books," he said.
