APS Music Teacher Brings "Musical Petting Zoo" to KidSpree
Kids in Aurora blew trumpets, whistled into flutes and pounded on bells thanks to Aurora Hills Middle School music teacher John Toepfer. Toepfer set up a “Musical Petting Zoo” at the city of Aurora’s annual KidSpree event recently.
More than 40 APS staff and student volunteers showed kids how to play musical instruments.
“Some kids are really eager to play an instrument. It’s fun to see them try hard to make a sound.”

Toepfer collected instruments from APS schools, and trained volunteers on all instruments to make sure they could help any child learn to play.
This is the fifth year APS has provided the “Musical Petting Zoo” to KidSpree. It allows music teachers to bring excitement to kids of all ages in Aurora.
“The joy on kids’ faces kids is unbelievable. They surprise themselves and their parents with what they can do. This experience allows parents and kids to connect on a musical level.”
