Vaughn Celebrates AYP Success

This year, staff, students and parents at Vaughn Elementary School are celebrating.  They learned that they made AYP, or Adequate Yearly Progress, under the Federal No Child Left Behind Act.  This is a change for Vaughn, as the school was on “corrective action” because they were not making federally mandated performance targets.

Under federal guidelines, Vaughn was able to move the number of students performing unsatisfactory on CSAP to targeted levels.  As a result, they are starting again with a clean slate.

Vaughn is a diverse school in Aurora.  Approximately 60 percent of students speak English as a second language, and 70 percent of the students are eligible for free and reduced lunch.  Approximately 70 percent of Vaughn students are Hispanic, 19 percent are Black and 11 percent are White.

Principal Judy Bleakley attributes Vaughn’s success to the hard work of staff, students and parents.
The Colorado Department of Education recently released AYP information on schools and districts around the state. To see the full listing of schools that made AYP and other AYP scores, visit www.cde.state.co.us/FedPrograms/AYP/Results.asp.
On Monday, Oct. 16, AYP scores will also be listed on the APS Web site at www.aps.k12.co.us/district-info/ayp.htm.

“We’ve been really focused. We really know our students. Our teachers are continually learning and growing, and our parents are working with us to support student learning at home. This is an exciting time for our school.”
