Student Assignment on Sudan Sparks Letters to President
When Elkhart teacher Melissa Champagne introduced a reading exercise about Sudan to her fifth-grade class, she had no idea the lesson would inspire so much passion from the students.
When Champagne's class read about the effects the war in Sudan had on the country's children, the story touched the hearts of students.
"We felt the people in the Sudan needed our help."
- Elkhart fifth grader
Champagne used the idea as a teaching opportunity. Students read articles to learn more about the plight of the Sudanese to make their letters more powerful.
"This project gave the students the chance to learn about the democratic process while enhancing their reading and writing skills."

Students mailed the letters in September.
"We are hopeful that he will write back soon. We really want to help bring peace to Sudan."

In addition to writing letters to President Bush, students developed posters for the community to sign to show how much they care. One wall in their classroom is devoted to Sudan and contains articles, pictures and even excerpts from the letters they wrote to the president.
"This is one assignment my students will never forget."
