Hinkley Students Earn Community Service Recognition

Hinkley High School students Rhesa Melvin and Chisom Agbim have created a unique way to mix their school life with community service.  When they were in the ninth grade, they watched other girls their age cope with teenage pregnancy, crime, domestic violence and drugs.

To reach out to their peers, Melvin and Agbim, along with fellow student Samara Payton, started "Sisters in the Community," a program that focuses on the personal, social and academic needs of girls.  SIC members have been involved in several community projects, including raising $2,500 for hurricane relief and collecting and donating supplies for teenage mothers.

SIC has been so successful at Hinkley that it has expanded to other high schools in APS.

"We saw how our friends who are teen mothers were struggling. We thought that a support group would give them a chance to help each other."

Melvin earned a $10,000 Student of Integrity Scholarship from the Better Business Bureau.  Channel 7 also recognized her as an Academic All Star and surprised her with a new laptop computer. She is now eligible to win the annual Academic All Star Award, which could include a $5,000 scholarship and an additional $5,000 for Hinkley.
She plans to user her new laptop as she pursues a degree in business management and entrepreneurship at Colorado State University this fall.

Channel 9 honored Agbim with a 9Kids Who Care award. The 9Kids Who Care program honors nine outstanding Colorado kids who go far beyond the ordinary in serving their community. In addition to her work with SIC, Agbim also volunteers at a local hospital and tutors other students. An Honor Roll student with a 4.0 GPA, Agbim is still deciding where to go to college.  She plans to pursue a career as a physician.
Congratulations to Rhesa and Chisom for their outstanding contributions to their school and community!
