Kenton Students "Grow" Dream Tree in Honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech has inspired people around the country and the world. In Laurie Foster's art class at Kenton Elementary, her students were inspired by his famous speech to "grow" a "Dream Tree."

Created from paper maché, construction and tissue paper, paint and colored markers, the tree expresses the ideas, thoughts and hopes of Foster's art students, who were inspired by the words and life of the famous civil rights leader. Students wrote these feelings and thoughts on the leaves of the tree. Fifth grader Brittany D. wrote on her leaf, "I have a dream that all countries will get along and that war will end."

As part of the recent Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend, Kenton students displayed their "Dream Tree" at the Aurora Municipal Center. They will also display their tree at various sites throughout APS.

“I think what we did was very creative because the tree is like the world and the things that I said are now a part of the world.”
-Brittany D.
