POW! BLAM! Montview Students BURP! with Comics

Wearing their own super T-shirts, third and fifth-grade students in the Boys Underground Reading Project at Montview Elementary get together in their "secret lair" to read their favorite comics and talk about their favorite superheroes. It's all part of a club that encourages student interest in reading.

"I like reading comics about Ghost Rider and the X-Men," said Kevin T., otherwise known as "The Kevinator" to the members of BURP. The students trade comic books to read and then talk about the stories in their monthly after-school meetings. Focusing primarily on comics from Marvel and DC, they also research the history of different superheroes (and villains!) and quiz each other on comic book trivia.
Ed Portoghese, Montview's P.E. teacher, came up with the idea for the super club along with fifth grader Eric H. and third-grade teacher Colin Rottiger.

“We thought it would be a great way for students, especially boys, to appreciate the value of reading through comic books and open discussion."

“We learn more things every time we meet and read. I get to learn about all the new superheroes and find out about some cool old ones, like Captain America and Green Lantern."
