Student Does "The Write Thing" for South M.S
Congratulations to South Middle School student Juan Carter, who won the “Colorado Do the Write Thing” writing contest sponsored by the National Campaign to Stop Violence. The program gives middle school students the opportunity to share their views on what should be done to reduce student violence.

Carter’s teacher, Sherry Keck, shared information about the program with her students and encouraged them to submit an essay. Students around the state submitted more than 900 essays, stories and plays.

Carter will travel to Washington, D.C. this summer for a recognition dinner as Colorado’s ambassador.

In addition to Carter’s trip, South Middle School received a grant for having the highest increase in contest participants. The grant will assist in funding a bully prevention program and support for literacy programs. South students submitted more than 70 entries this school year.

“I am excited! I’ve never been to Washington, D.C. and seen the White House. In the future I want to be a music producer and I know I need to be a good writer.”
